John "Pops" Witherspoon was an American actor and comedian who performed in dozens of television shows and films.
Best known for his role as Willie Jones for the Friday series, Witherspoon also starred in films such as Hollywood Shuffle (1987), Boomerang (1992) and Vampire In Brooklyn (1995).
The American actor and comedian, John Witherspoon died at the early hour on Wednesday, 30th-October-2019.

His death was announced in a statement released by the Witherspoon family.
The statement reads below:
“It is with deep sadness we have to tweet this, but our husband & father John Witherspoon has passed away. He was a Legend in the entertainment industry, and a father figure to all who watched him over the years. We love you “POPS” always & forever."See post below;

Witherspoon was born in Detroit in 1942 and launched a stand-up comedy career and began acting in the late 1970s.

Witherspoon was perhaps best known for his role as Ice Cube’s grumpy dad on Friday, he also voiced Gramps on the cult animated series,’ The Boondocks.’
Ice Cube said in a Twitter post he was devastated by the death. "Life won't be as funny without him," he added.
Celebrities including Chance The Rapper, actress Jackée Harry, director Judd Apatow and Ava Dupernay paid tributes to the actor.
